Coins are not only sources for acquiring knowledge of the economic history, but they also cast light on the thoughts of the kings and emirs and their various religious policies. In the historical researches conducted in Iran, coins are considered to be primary sources of information; even the locally struck coins such as the ones minted in Shūshtar, which are the focus of this article, make valuable contributions to the researchers of the local history. Shūshtar, a city in Khūzistān province, has been a Dār al-Żarb (mint) from the Umayyad dynasty to the Qajar period and the coins struck in this city were made in the proximity to Qaysaria and the Tomb of Sayyid Muhammad Bāzār. The Astan Quds Razavi Museum, which is home to a great numismatic collection of the Islamic era, houses a collection of coins minted in Shūshtar. This article accumulated, identified and analyzed the coins of Shūshtar mint in the Astan Quds Razavi Museum. This research aims to answer the two questions of what the characteristics of the coins minted in Shūshtar are and what issues these coins address. The results of this research indicate that during the Būyid, Muzaffarid, Jalāyirid and Safavid dynasties, the rulers attached great importance to the city of Shūshtar and its surrounding countryside such as Dastwā and Askar Mukarram and the abundance of the coins struck there displays the economic status of this city.
This research was done using descriptive-analytical method, library resources and also coins in the Astan Quds Razavi Museum
