Protection, introduction and research on the local characteristics of cities through local and specialized museums can be considered as one of the ways of tourism development and sustainability. Local and specialized museums represent and chart the culture of a city or a region and can be used to record and protect valuable elements and phenomena of that city or region. This type of attitude towards the museum and local characteristics is beyond the modernist views and the mere display of objects. In the small towns of our country; they have valuable social and cultural components, especially valuable national and religious rituals and customs that are on the verge of being weakened, forgotten and destroyed. Therefore, by raising the issue that the developments of the present age; It threatens the sustainability of the native characteristics of the cities. As well as the importance of tourism in promoting the sustainability of cities, it can be said that local and specialized museums can be useful in this regard and be a suitable platform for applying and realizing this method. The purpose of this research is to study the role of local museums in the social, cultural and economic sustainability of small towns, to investigate existing issues, to identify the capabilities of local and specialized museums, and to provide solutions related to the sustainability of small towns. This research first by reviewing the records of the subject and studying the role of museums in the sustainability of cities; the ability of local and specialized museums in the sustainability of small cities is studied and finally, proposed solutions are presented in this regard. This article, while emphasizing the development of the city based on local characteristics and capabilities, and the need to think about the fading away of local components, considers local and specialized museums useful and effective in this regard, and recommends its use in small towns. to do local museums; In addition to the role of protecting and exhibiting unique local phenomena, as a point of reference for attracting tourists, introducing, protecting and researching traditional and attractive methods of producing products; It will be agriculture and animal husbandry, local livelihood, etc. These museums, with a more comprehensive view from the modernist point of view of displaying objects, can be one of the main centers of small cities in the protection, introduction, display and research related to the mentioned cities in their cultural, social and economic dimensions.
