Coffeehouse painting is a school of narrative painting that became popular during the Qajar period with martial, musical, and religious themes. Important curtains with the theme of Ashura have been painted within this school; each curtain has a special place. The curtain of Hosseiniyeh Kabbabi in Birjand, which was registered in the list of national works with the date 1338 AH, is on the theme of the incident of the day of Ashura. This work has special features in terms of form and narrative. The aim of this research is to identify and analyze the form and writing in the mentioned curtain. In this research, the narrative, form, color, and placement of visual elements in the two curtains of Hosseiniyeh Kabbabi in Birjand and the Noon Ashura curtain of Qollar Aghasi are compared. Therefore, the present study seeks to answer two questions: A. What are the similarities and differences in form and content of the visual and narrative elements in the two plays of the afternoon of Ashura by Qollar Aghasi and Hosseiniyeh Kabbabi of Birjand? B. How are the ways in which the figures of saints and villains are depicted in these two works distinguished? This is a descriptive-analytical study in which the data has been analyzed using a comparative method. The method of collecting information was field and library and using online data. As a result of this study, similarities and differences between the two plays were identified, which indicated the density of characters and the limitation of narratives in the play of Hosseiniyeh Kabbabi.
