In Iran, the curatorial profession still lacks a clear legal and regulatory framework for explaining duties and responsibilities; an issue that in practice causes misunderstandings of the curator's role, weaknesses in exhibition management, and sometimes conflicts between artists and curators. In many Western countries, curators have a specific professional status and are protected by codified laws, but in Iran, there is no specific relationship between the responsibilities of the artist and the curator, and the position of the law in this regard is not clear. Therefore, this research raises a main question: Are there codified and effective laws in place for the proper implementation of curatorial duties in Iran? Therefore, this research aims to examine the position of the law in explaining curatorial duties and tries to provide a solution for a precise and professional definition of this role by citing theoretical sources, international research, and field data obtained from interviews with Iranian artists. The research method is applied and qualitative in nature and descriptive-analytical. Data were collected in two ways: 1. A library and document study on the history of curatorship in the West and Iran, and legal laws related to artistic activities; 2. A field study including a questionnaire among two artists active in the field of visual arts. The results show that the lack of a legal framework and professional ethics in Iran is the most important factor in the emergence of professional disorders in this field. Based on the thematic analysis of the data, five main themes were extracted: the crisis of professional ethics, the lack of supervision and law, the necessity of professionalizing curators, the consequences of ineffective cooperation, and the solutions proposed by artists. The results of the study show that in order to improve the status of curators in Iran, binding laws, a licensing system, and an independent supervisory authority should be developed so that curatorial activities can be promoted from a personal and experimental state to a professional and legal structure. This study aims to clarify the responsibilities of curators in Iran and increase the awareness of legal authorities about this role and its duties. Such an action will help to better develop this profession and improve the status of art in Iran.
