The Tehran-Qazvin trunk road, a critical segment of the trans-regional Silk Road network, has historically functioned as a primary socio-economic and cultural artery within the northwestern Tehran Province. This study re-evaluates the formation and evolutionary trajectory of this corridor during the Late Islamic period by synthesizing historical archival data with systematic archaeological field surveys and material evidence. Moving beyond mere descriptive accounts, the research investigates the multi-dimensional drivers-geographical, economic, and geopolitical-that catalyzed the route’s structural development and sustained its functional continuity. Adopting a rigorous descriptive-analytical framework, the investigation interrogates the strategic nexus between environmental accessibility and the institutionalized infrastructures required for long-distance transit. The findings demonstrate that the corridor’s significance was underpinned by a triad of decisive factors: its strategic geographical positioning facilitating inter-regional connectivity; intensified commercial mercantilism that necessitated the proliferation of caravanserais and specialized roadside architecture; and critical political imperatives. Specifically, the research highlights how the Safavid and Qajar administrations’ responses to shifting geopolitical dynamics with Ottoman and European powers necessitated the reinforcement of logistical security and infrastructural stability for travelers and caravans. Ultimately, this study posits that the Tehran-Qazvin highway was not a passive transit route but a sophisticated, state-managed network that played a fundamental role in the socio-political integration and economic cohesion of the Iranian plateau during the Late Islamic era. This research provides new insights into the spatial organization of historical communication corridors and their long-term impact on regional landscape evolution and cultural exchange throughout the late medieval and early modern periods.
